D Cryme Defends Twi Pop Innovation Amidst Genre Evolution: ‘I’m Here to Spice Up the Game, Not Kill It”
The CEO of Twi Pop Records and Ghanaian musician, D-Cryme, has asserted his independence from following musical trends, affirming his creation of a unique genre.
Despite the prominence of highlife and hiplife in Ghanaian music culture, D-Cryme forged his path with Twi Pop, diverging from the mainstream.
Amidst accusations of weakening traditional genres, D-Cryme defended his artistic integrity, emphasizing his intent to innovate rather than dismantle existing norms.
“Well, I didn’t come to destroy the game, but I’m here to spice up the game. The hi-life genre was created by someone close to that person. I asked about Hilife, and the story behind it is just too much, but anyway hiplife according to Grandpapa (Reggie Rockstone) is a blend of Hilife and rap.
But just know that DCryme is not a “follow-back” artiste. I don’t follow the masses and what everyone is doing. So I came up with a style and genre named Twi-Pop. With the Twi pop, it’s Ghanaian language that is Twi in a hip-hop style and I don’t see any thing wrong with that. I’m not here to kill the game.”
“For me whether people hopped on the genre or not I don’t care. I was here to make a new turn and to create something different which I did, so whether people liked it or not it shouldn’t be my daily problem. Whoever is saying I played a part in sinking highlife or hiplife is wrong because there’s nothing wrong in creating our genre”, he shockingly revealed.
He also shared his thoughts on Ghanaians abandoning hilife and hiplife for Afrobeat. “Allow the musician to feel free. In the end, it is what is selling and who is doing it better. If Afrobeatz is the new normal allow them to do it”, he added.
Regarding the shift towards Afrobeatz, D-Cryme advocated for artistic freedom, urging acceptance of evolving musical landscapes. These revelations were shared during an interview on Spice FM’s “Ofie ne fie” with Nana Ama Shancy, alongside the announcement of his new EP, “Unexpected 2,” available on all digital platforms.
