D Cryme Advocates for Increased Promotion of Ghanaian Music, Calls for Enforced Royalty System
Ghanaian music sensation Darlington Agyekum, also known as D Cryme, has raised a pressing concern with the government, echoing the sentiments shared by many musicians in Ghana.
During an interview on Spice FM’s “Ofie ne fie,” D Cryme emphasized to host Nana Ama Shancy and the public the importance of increasing the presence of Ghanaian music within the country.
He expressed a desire for the government to enforce its directives on promoting Ghanaian music, as failure to do so has led to an overabundance of Nigerian songs dominating the airwaves.
“I would love it if the government stood on its ground when it comes to playing more Ghanaian music. I mean, they instructed everyone to do so, but it wasn’t enforced.
Due to that, when you see TV and radio stations playing more Nigerian songs, you just can’t question them as an artiste because this particular instruction wasn’t enforced. This thing is killing the industry, trust me,” he lamented.
The “Kill Me Shy” hitmaker burst out after the host, Nana Ama Shancy, asked him what he would change in the music industry if he had the power.
He also mentioned the royalty system in Ghana and how poor it is.
“Our royalty system in Ghana is not encouraging at all, so artiste ain’t reaping what they sow. I don’t blame the bodies in charge because, trust me, they are doing what they can, but the system is just poor. They don’t know the number of times a particular song has been played all over the country, so they just give us what they got out of their contention, which shouldn’t be so,” he cried out.
D Cryme’s fervent wish is for stricter enforcement of laws governing the creative arts industry, ensuring that artists can reap the rewards of their labour.
