NUGS urges govt to tackle concerns of Ghanaian students on foreign scholarships
The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has urged the government to promptly tackle the grievances of Ghanaian students on government scholarships studying abroad.
This call comes after scholarship recipients in Morocco staged a protest due to the prolonged delay in receiving their stipends, spanning over 10 months.
They cited increased hardships, including difficulties in affording food and essential hygiene products.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, May 29, NUGS President Kyeremeh Oppong Daniel affirmed the union’s dedication to addressing the issue.
He highlighted the challenges faced not only by students in Morocco but also those in the UK, India, and beneficiaries of the Students Loan Trust Fund.
“We are very perturbed by the current happenings, but we are pretty much sure this listening government is going to take a quick step toward solving this particular challenge.” Mr. Kyeremeh stated.
He stressed the importance of adequate funding to support education, especially considering the rising number of students entering tertiary institutions due to the free senior high school policy.
NUGS called on relevant authorities to expedite efforts to address students’ concerns and alleviate their hardships.
Mr. Kyeremeh emphasized the urgency of proper funding to ensure students receive the education needed to contribute to the country’s development.
“The Students Loan Trust Fund is one key area that should be looked at. We are calling on the government and all agencies to come and rescue students in the country.” he added.
