The Ministry of Local Government and Decentralization has provided drones to 17 Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies to assist in monitoring and preventing illegal activities like waste dumping in drains.

This initiative aims to bolster the country’s flood mitigation and sanitation efforts.

In a statement delivered by Dr. Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo, representing the Minister, the GARID project coordinator inaugurated a steering committee and inter-jurisdictional coordination management to support flood preparedness efforts along the Odaw River basin.

Dr. Sarfo underscored the significance of drones in aiding Assembly oversight functions, highlighting their advanced technology and specific use for monitoring waste hotspots.

He cautioned against misuse, emphasizing that the drones are not for social events like weddings or funerals.

“They are not the ones that you ordinarily see around for programmes like weddings and funerals. So, we are cautioning the Assembly not to allow staff, appointees, friends and whoever to utilise the drones for these kinds of social events.”
