Government’s commitment to safety of journalists – Information Minister

The Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, has revealed that the government is putting in place measures to support efforts made towards the safety of journalists, including establishing the Coordinated Mechanism on the Safety of Journalists (CMSJ).

CMSJ, explained by the minister, is a dedicated mechanism that allows journalists to report threats or incidents in pursuit of justice, and the Media Capacity Enhancement Programme (MCEP), provides training and resources for journalists to enhance their skills.

During her ongoing tour of various media houses in Accra, the minister noted that the media plays a crucial role in any democracy, adding that the government is committed to the safety of journalists, particularly during this election period.

The Honourable Fatimatu Abubakar also reiterated the government’s commitment to intensifying sensitization on implementing the Right to Information (RTI) Law and ensuring that the Broadcasting Bill is also laid before parliament this year.

“I am hopeful the government will explore the possibility of establishing an RTI fund to smoothen the demand chain,” she added.
