“Probably none of us will have a job”, says Elon Musk about artificial intelligence
Elon Musk recently shared his perspective on artificial intelligence (AI) potentially replacing jobs and its implications.
Speaking at VivaTech 2024 in Paris via webcam, Musk envisioned a future where AI and robots would handle most tasks, making jobs “optional” for humans.
“Probably none of us will have a job,” Musk stated.
He emphasized the need for “universal high income,” although he didn’t detail what this would entail, distinct from universal basic income (UBI).
Musk highlighted the potential for AI to fulfill all goods and services needs, eliminating scarcity.
The pace of AI development has raised concerns about responsible use and job displacement.
However, MIT’s research suggests that AI adoption in workplaces is slower than anticipated, with many jobs resistant to automation due to economic factors.
Jobs requiring high emotional intelligence and human interaction, such as mental health professionals and teachers, are less likely to be replaced.
Musk’s keynote underscored his apprehensions about AI, calling it his biggest fear.
He referenced the “Culture Book Series” by Ian Banks as a realistic portrayal of a future AI-driven society.
Despite AI’s capabilities, Musk questioned whether a job-free world would provide emotional fulfillment and meaning for individuals.
He also urged parents to limit children’s exposure to social media, cautioning about the influence of AI-driven algorithms.
