Deadly explosion at Tanzanian sugar factory kills 11
An explosion at a sugar factory in Tanzania’s Mvomero district has resulted in the deaths of eleven people, with two others sustaining injuries, according to authorities.
The incident occurred when a heavy-duty steam pipe burst during the start of production on Wednesday night, as reported by the fire and rescue team.
Among the victims are nationals from Brazil, India, China, and Kenya, in addition to Tanzanians, officials confirmed.
Regional police commander Alex Mkama stated that investigations into the cause of the explosion are underway.
The blast occurred around 01:00 local time on Thursday at Mtibwa Sugar Estates Limited, a prominent sugar manufacturer in Tanzania.
All the deceased were part of the electrical and machine staff working in the control room at the time of the explosion, Mr. Mkama added.
In response to the tragedy, Mtibwa Sugar Company has halted all production activities at the affected factory, which is one of the largest in the country.
The bodies of the deceased workers have been transferred to the mortuary of the factory’s hospital for further procedures.
