Buaben Asamoa claims arrest of Hopeson Adorye is politically motivated

Yaw Buaben Asamoa, a member of the Movement for Change and former Member of Parliament for the Adentan constituency, has asserted that the arrest of Hopeson Adorye is driven by political motives.

Hopeson Adorye, a leading figure in the Movement for Change, was apprehended by police following his claim of detonating dynamites in the Volta Region during the 2016 General Elections. This claim, made during a radio interview in Accra, has since gained widespread attention.

In an interview with Accra-based Citi FM, Buaben Asamoa explained that Adorye was summoned to the police headquarters on Wednesday and subsequently detained.

Buaben Asamoa, who accompanied Hopeson Adorye, stated that they spent the entire day at the police headquarters where Mr Adorye was asked to give a statement. However, around 6 pm, they were informed that Adorye would be held in custody pending further directives from higher authorities.

Buaben Asamoa argued that Mr Adorye’s detention is politically motivated, suggesting that the police are acting on orders from above, rather than making an independent decision. He believes the arrest is an attempt to intimidate and silence the Movement for Change, particularly due to Adorye’s outspoken nature.

“Because if Hopeson has been active and there are people feeling uneasy about some of his statements, this is a method to intimidate him and the Movement for Change. It won’t work. I strongly believe this is politically motivated,” Buaben Asamoa remarked.

Hopeson Adorye remains in custody and is expected to appear in court on Thursday. While he has not yet been charged, the police are investigating the case as a potential publication of false information.
