Biodiversity Day 2024: Embracing Unity for Our Planet’s Diversity
Biodiversity Day is marked annually on May 22. The day serves as a reminder of the critical importance of biodiversity in sustaining life on Earth.
Biodiversity is the variety of living organisms that inhabit the planet, which is the foundation upon which human existence and well-being depend.
However, in recent decades, biodiversity has faced numerous threats, including habitat loss and overexploitation of natural resources, pollution, evasive species, and climate change driven by human activities.
The theme for this year’s day, “Be part of the Plan,” emphasises the need for a collective and coordinated approach to reverse the laws on biodiversity and support the implementation of the Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Dr. Gyan-Ansah said the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, in collaboration with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, has mapped out plans to preserve underutilized species in the ecosystem.
