The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Western Region has organized a training workshop on good manufacturing practices for water producers in Takoradi.
The Western Regional Director of the FDA, Dr. Martin Kusi, said that once water is drawn from the source, it must be properly sanitized, and to guarantee the cleanliness of the water, manufacturers must go through quality assurance processes.
Dr. Martin Kusi emphasised the importance of public health in ensuring that everyone was aware of health risks through educational and sensitization programmes.
Some key aspects participants were taken through included process documentation in their daily operations, filtration, and ultraviolet light sanitiser.
Dr. Kusi advised the public to desist from purchasing water under certain conditions.
He recommended the use of reverse osmosis (RO) water filters for packaged water makers, saying that they were used to remove a lot of pollutants from water by forcing the water under pressure through a semi-permeable membrane.
He said that the RO system’s energy consumption was relatively low compared to other similar systems and that the water obtained from an RO was free of germs that might cause illnesses.
She emphasised its benefits of being cost-effective, having no change or odour, being environmentally friendly, and having no disinfection of by-products.
Some participants shared with Beach News some takeaways from the workshop.
