John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged that his next administration will aggressively tackle and defeat corruption, which he asserts is crippling Ghana’s economy.
In a discussion with the Christian Ecumenical Council on Monday, May 20, Mahama emphasized that his government would implement strong measures to combat financial malfeasance and corruption.
He highlighted the detrimental impacts of corruption, including financial malfeasance, cost inflation, and uncompleted projects funded by the state. “The impacts of many cases of financial malfeasance, stealing, cost inflation, sole source contracts, and projects that are funded but never completed are becoming more the norm than the exemption,” Mahama stated.
Citing specific examples, Mahama referred to the Pwalugu multi-purpose dam project, which involved nearly $1 billion in investment. “Recently, MPs raised the issue of the Pwalugu multi-purpose dam project, which was supposed to be an almost $1 billion investment. A contract was awarded, and $12 million was paid to the contractor for absolutely no work done,” he noted.
Mahama made a firm commitment that under his leadership, the NDC government would fight and overcome the scourge of corruption. “I make a firm promise that the administration that I will lead will fight the canker of corruption and defeat it,” he declared.
