Iran declares 5-day national mourning after President Raisi’s death
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has declared a five-day mourning period after the tragic demise of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in north-western Iran, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.
The crash occurred during their visit to the region near the Azerbaijan border, where Mr. Raisi was engaged in official meetings.
Ayatollah Khamenei expressed condolences to the people of Iran, marking Mr. Raisi’s potential succession to the supreme leadership.
Elections for a new president are scheduled for 28 June, with Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber temporarily assuming duties. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani has been appointed as acting foreign minister.
Initial reports suggested the helicopter made a hard landing in foggy conditions.
Following recovery efforts, the bodies have been transported for funeral arrangements, with a funeral procession planned in Tabriz.
Mr. Raisi, known for his conservative stance, was elected president in 2021. Despite his passing, the Iranian government assured uninterrupted operations.
Several nations, including Pakistan, India, Turkey, Russia, China, and the EU, expressed condolences.
Hamas and Hezbollah also mourned his death, while the White House cited concerns about Iran’s support for terrorist activities and human rights violations during Mr. Raisi’s tenure.
