Two Togolese arrested for attempting to register to vote in Ghana
Two Togolese nationals are in Jasikan Municipal Police custody for attempting to register for Ghana’s ongoing voter registration exercise.
They were apprehended by National Security officers on May 19 and handed over to the police for further legal proceedings.
According to the National Security officers, the suspects were allegedly brought to the Jasikan Municipal Registration Centre by leaders of a local political party. Despite attempts by the party’s leaders to secure bail for them, they remained in police custody.
This incident follows a similar arrest in Asokore Mampong last week, where two Nigeriens were detained for attempting to register as voters without proper documentation.
Also, the Electoral Commission (EC) has cautioned political parties against transporting minors and foreigners to registration centers.
Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Electoral Commissioner, emphasized the importance of political parties in ensuring a credible voter register for the upcoming elections.
He urged party leaders to discourage such actions, stating that attempts to register minors and foreigners undermine Ghana’s electoral democracy.
