The Public Relations Officer of the Western Region Command of the Ghana National Fire Service, ADO 2 Afia Pongo has indicated that investigations, leading to the premix fuel explosion in Ngyirasia have commenced.
This unfortunate incident claimed the lives of 16 persons, leaving two dead.
In an interview on Spice FM, ADO 2 Afia Pongo, revealed that the deceased were aged 15 & 17 respectively.
She said, such an incident could have been prevented if the fisher folks had handled the premix fuel with caution. Madam Pongo added that the GNFS will continue to offer education to the fisher folks to prevent such occurrences in the future.
Last Saturday, some fishermen were transporting premix fuel in barrels to their canoes along the beach.
The incident occurred when a barrel toppled over, spilt its contents, and ignited coming in contact with a naked flame, causing a catastrophic explosion.
Meanwhile, the Western Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation, Abdul Ganiyu visited that scene and told the media the need for increased education for coastal communities.
