GRA refutes allegations suggesting that import duties are calculated in dollars
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has denied claims that import duties are calculated in dollars.
Eric Boateng, head of the Automobile Dealers Union, expressed worries about the impact of duties, especially those in dollars, on second-hand car importers in Ghana during an interview.
But the GRA, in a statement released on Friday, May 17, dismissed these claims as “misleading” and urged the public to ignore them.
“The claims that GRA calculates duties in foreign currency are misleading and should be disregarded. The basis of calculation of duties is provided for in the Customs Act 2015, (Act 891),” the GRA clarified.
The GRA explained that the value of goods is converted into Ghanaian Cedis using the Bank of Ghana exchange rate. Duties and taxes are then calculated based on this value.
Additionally, the GRA clarified that the Cost, Insurance, and Freight (CIF) values are given in internationally accepted currencies like dollars, euros, and pounds sterling.
