KT Hammond orders immediate reversal of cement price hike

KT Hammond, has instructed the CMDC to direct cement manufacturing companies to immediately reverse the recent increase in cement prices.

KT Hammond, the Minister for Trade and Industry, has instructed the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee (CMDC) to direct cement manufacturing companies in Ghana to immediately reverse the recent increase in cement prices.

Recalling his earlier directive to the CMDC at its inauguration on March 8, 2024, the Minister also requested the publication of retail cement prices by all manufacturers to curb arbitrary price hikes.

KT Hammond reiterated his call for the CMDC to collaborate with cement companies to ensure uniform cement prices nationwide. He suggested adopting a unified cement pricing mechanism similar to the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF) used by the National Petroleum Authority for fuel retail in Ghana.

The CMDC, established under the Ghana Standards Authority (Manufacture of Cement) Regulations, 2023 (LI 2480), is chaired by the Director General of the Ghana Standards Authority, Prof. Alex Dodoo.

The committee includes representatives from cement manufacturers, the Association of Ghana Industries, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Ghanaian Institution of Engineers, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation.

As the regulator for cement manufacture in Ghana, the CMDC is tasked with promoting the manufacture, wholesale, and retail of cement and its components.
