Nigerian security forces successfully rescued students abducted from a university in northern Kogi state, along with other hostages held by the abductors, according to statements from the army and state government on Sunday.

Kogi’s information commissioner, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, reported that security forces engaged in a gun battle with the armed gang responsible for Thursday’s kidnapping at Confluence University of Science and Technology.

The state collaborated with local hunters familiar with the Kogi terrain, resulting in injuries to a security agent and a hunter.

The Nigerian army, in a separate statement, described the operation involving troops, security agencies, and local vigilantes as “a fierce firefight” with the kidnappers.

“The superior firepower of the troops led to the kidnappers abandoning nine of the kidnapped students, who were subsequently rescued,” the army stated.
