Slovakian authorities are on a hunt to identify the sender behind more than 1,000 bomb threats directed at schools and other establishments on Tuesday.
Police teams, along with sniffer dogs and bomb disposal experts, responded to these threats across the country, resulting in mass evacuations.
The threats, treated by officials as “a particularly serious crime of terrorist attack,” started arriving via email at 05:00 from an anonymous sender.
These emails claimed that explosives were hidden in hundreds of schools across Slovakia’s eight regions.
The threats, reportedly increasing in number, were written in Slovak, sent from a Russian email address, and targeted entities described as enemies of Islam.
Classes were halted as specialized teams worked to investigate these alerts, which were mainly directed at schools but also targeted banks and electrical stores.
Slovakian police are collaborating with security services to track down the perpetrators, acknowledging the psychological stress and educational disruptions caused by these threats.
These incidents occurred amid heightened tensions due to the war in neighboring Ukraine.
Slovakia’s leader, Robert Fico, who took office as a populist-nationalist, has made commitments regarding ammunition supplies to Ukraine, refusing to participate in an international effort led by the Czech Republic to acquire artillery ammunition for Ukrainian forces.
If apprehended, the individual responsible for the bomb threats could face life imprisonment.
