National Tenants Union: Saglemi Privatization a Sign of Government Failure

Frederick Opoku, the Secretary General of the National Tenants Union of Ghana, has indicated that the privatisation of the Saglemi housing project is a sign of failure on the part of the government.

According to him, there is a growing population in the country’s capital but there are no plans made to accommodate persons who migrate from rural communities into urban towns.

He pointed out that currently there are accommodation deficits in the country due to high rent charges.

Mr. Opoku mentioned rent or shelter as an integral need for the survival of humans, and authorities should not downplay the importance of such.

He also bemoaned the lack of policies to address housing challenges faced by citizens.

Mr. Opoku however, implored the Akuffo-Addo-led administration to reconsider its decision to hand over
the 1,506 housing units to a private entity.

Instead, they are advocating for future governments to explore alternative strategies that prioritize the public good and taxpayers’ interests, especially considering the $200,000,000 initially secured by the NDC government for the project’s inception.

Mr. Frederick Opoku spoke in an interview on Spice FM with host of the Morning Show, Ampem Darko.
