The leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has acknowledged the achievements of the government’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy while also highlighting the need for further improvements.

He has reiterated his commitment to ensuring the long-term sustainability of the policy under his leadership.

Although the Free SHS initiative has encountered challenges, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama pledging to reassess it if elected, the Vice President emphasized its overall success.

In an interview with Africa Watch Magazine, Dr. Bawumia stated, “The Free SHS policy has undeniably been a triumph.

However, this does not mean it is flawless. There remains room for enhancement.”

He assured plans to address shortcomings by investing in additional infrastructure such as classrooms, dormitories, and dining facilities for schools across Ghana.

Furthermore, he pledged to prioritize teacher training and professional development, ensuring curriculum alignment with workforce demands.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the significant increase in student enrollment in Senior High Schools, especially from disadvantaged regions.

He also noted the achievement of gender parity in SHS education, with more girls benefiting from the program.

Moreover, he emphasized that despite the surge in enrollment, there has been no compromise on quality, as evidenced by the impressive performance of Free Senior High School beneficiaries in national examinations.

In sum, while celebrating its successes, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the ongoing need to refine and enhance the Free SHS policy to better serve Ghanaian youth.
