Traders at Kwadaso onion market decline moving to designated site
Traders at the Kwadaso Onion Market in the Ashanti Region are steadfastly refusing to relocate to a new site designated for their move, even four days after being forcibly removed from their original location.
Their reluctance stems from concerns about potential future evictions and doubts about the suitability of the new location secured by the Kwadaso Municipal Assembly at Atwima Takyiman.
Following orders from the Ashanti Regional Security Council, the market was cleared on Monday, with security forces overseeing the demolition of numerous structures.
Yet, despite the once-vibrant market now lying deserted, the traders are resolute in their refusal to shift to the provided land.
Alhaji Abdallah Umar, an elder of the Kwadaso Onion Market, explained in an interview with Citi News that there has been no formal agreement between the traders and authorities regarding the relocation.
He emphasized that none of the market leaders have been approached or have consented to the move, citing concerns about the new site’s capacity to accommodate all traders.
Umar highlighted the lack of information about the new location, expressing skepticism about its adequacy. The traders’ leadership is urging members to remain calm while assuring them that their grievances will be addressed.
They are seeking intervention from notable figures like the Asantehene and the Regional Chief Imam to mediate the situation.
On the other hand, Ashanti Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah refuted claims that the traders were uninformed about the relocation.
He stated that engagement had occurred for over a year, with a press release issued six months prior, urging relocation.
However, he admitted he could not guarantee protection from future evictions at the new site, as development decisions are beyond his control.
