Namibia criticizes tourists for posing nude on Big Daddy dune
Namibia’s authorities have denounced tourists who were photographed posing nude on the iconic Big Daddy dune in the Namib Desert, a top attraction in the country.
According to visitors interviewed by a local newspaper, the behavior was met with shock, prompting calls for action against the tourists involved.
Unnamed foreigners engaged in the incident may face being barred from entering any of Namibia’s parks, as stated by a spokesperson from the tourism ministry in comments to local media.
Photos and a video capturing the incident have circulated widely, eliciting strong reactions.
Kenneth Nependa, vice-chairperson of the Federation of Namibian Tourism Associations, expressed concern that such behavior could attract tourists who disregard local norms.
He emphasized that the Big Daddy dune is not only a tourist spot but also a destination for families.
The identities of the three male tourists seen naked on the dune, alongside their clothing, in the images and video remain unknown.
Despite inquiries from BBC, authorities have yet to provide information on the tourists’ identities.
Romeo Muyunda, spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism, described the behavior as “extremely shocking” and emphasized that it constitutes public indecency under Namibian law.
He noted that the tourists had left the country by the time authorities were alerted.
Muyunda urged Namibians to promptly report violations of park regulations to ensure swift action.
The Big Daddy dune is located in Namib-Naukluft National Park, one of the world’s largest, and is a popular destination for tourists seeking panoramic views from its summit.
