Sydney Bishop stabbed in church forgives attacker

Sydney

Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, who was stabbed at a Sydney church in what police describe as a religiously motivated terror act, has expressed forgiveness towards his alleged attacker.

In an audio message released by the church, Bishop Emmanuel stated that he is “recovering quickly” and urged the community to remain calm.

The attack, which injured four people and was livestreamed, led to a riot outside The Good Shepherd Church as supporters of the bishop gathered in anger.

A 16-year-old boy, also injured in the incident, has been arrested, though no charges have been filed against him yet. Authorities have refrained from disclosing the suspected beliefs of the boy.

Bishop Emmanuel’s message of forgiveness extended to both the perpetrator and anyone associated with the act. He emphasized, “I forgive whoever has done this act… And whoever sent you to do this, I forgive them as well in Jesus’s mighty name.”

He reassured the public about his well-being, stating, “there is no need to be worried or concerned.”

The New South Wales Police have highlighted the severity of the stabbing, emphasizing that the bishop is fortunate to have survived.

The incident occurred during mass at the Assyrian Orthodox Church, prompting a strong reaction from the community and leading to violent unrest outside the church premises.

In response to the incident and its aftermath, authorities have made arrests and pledged to pursue charges against those involved.

Bishop Emmanuel also urged his supporters to cooperate with the police, emphasizing the need for a Christ-like approach and non-retaliation.
