The Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have issued a joint statement urging commuters not to comply with any proposed new transport fares that have not received official approval.
This statement comes in response to the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana declaring a 30 percent increase in transport fares effective April 13, 2024.
The GPRTU and GRTCC clarified that this decision to raise fares was due to the government’s failure to address their grievances adequately.
However, the GPRTU and GRTCC emphasized that any fare hike outside the guidelines outlined in the Administrative Instrument governing the review of public transport fares in the country is considered illegal and should be disregarded.
Both organizations highlighted their ongoing efforts to engage with stakeholders and the Ministry of Transport to assess various cost components thoroughly.
They aim to reach a mutually agreeable resolution on the matter.
“We are urging Regional Administrations, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies, as well as Station Welfare committees, to ensure compliance with existing fares as no decision has been made regarding any fare increment,” stated the joint press release.
The GPRTU and GRTCC also called on drivers to adhere to this directive and expressed their commitment to advocating for the welfare of transport operators.
They emphasized that any fare increase must be in line with official procedures and guidelines.
