Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia firmly rejects LGBTQ practices in resolute Eid address
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana, has strongly rejected LGBTQ practices in the country.
Speaking publicly for the first time on this issue, Dr. Bawumia made his stance clear while addressing a large gathering of Muslims in Kumasi during Eid prayers.
In his address, Dr. Bawumia unequivocally stated his opposition to LGBTQ practices, aligning his views with Ghanaian cultural norms, religious beliefs, and social values.
He emphasized that both his personal beliefs and his Islamic faith are firmly against homosexuality, citing the teachings of the Holy Quran that prohibit LGBTQ acts, including same-sex marriages.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized, “I personally cannot support that which my religion, and indeed, all the major religions in Ghana clearly and unequivocably forbid.”
He stressed that major religious traditions in Ghana, including Christianity and Islam, stand in opposition to LGBTQ practices, and he affirmed his continued opposition to it, even as President.
Ghana’s Parliament has passed a robust anti-LGBTQ Bill, which is awaiting Presidential approval.
However, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has indicated that he cannot sign the bill into law at this time due to ongoing legal challenges regarding its constitutionality raised by human rights activists.
