Nigerian celebrity Bobrisky arrested for abusing banknotes
Nigerian celebrity Bobrisky, also known as Idris Okuneye, has been arrested on charges of abusing banknotes.
The incident reportedly occurred during a film premiere in Lagos, where Bobrisky allegedly threw banknotes in the air, a practice known as “spraying” commonly seen at Nigerian weddings and celebrations.
Authorities consider this act as an offense because the banknotes end up on the ground where they can be damaged.
While the maximum punishment for such an offense is six months in jail, actual prosecutions are rare.
The alleged incident took place at the premiere of the film “Ajakaju,” produced by actress Eniola Ajao, at the Film One Circle Mall in Lekki, Lagos.
Videos of the event circulated widely on social media, potentially prompting authorities to take action.
Bobrisky, a popular figure with over five million followers on Instagram, has not yet commented on the matter.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) spokesperson stated that Bobrisky would face charges once investigations are complete, although no specific timeline was provided.
This incident echoes a previous case where actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin was sentenced to six months in prison for a similar offense of abusing new naira notes.
