Elderly American woman killed by elephant in Zambian national park
In Zambia’s Kafue National Park, an elderly American woman lost her life when an elephant charged at a vehicle carrying tourists.
The incident, which occurred during a wildlife viewing excursion on Saturday, resulted in the death of 79-year-old Gail Mattson, as confirmed by her family.
Another woman sustained injuries and was transferred to a medical facility in South Africa, while four others suffered minor injuries.
The conservation and hospitality company Wilderness, responsible for the trip, expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate event.
Wilderness CEO Keith Vincent explained that despite the guides’ extensive training and experience, the terrain and vegetation obstructed the vehicle’s movement, leading to the tragic encounter with the bull elephant.
Authorities dispatched a helicopter to the scene for investigation. Vincent extended condolences to Mattson’s family and assured support for the affected guests and guide.
Mattson’s family remembered her as a beloved grandmother and retired mortgage professional who cherished her African adventure.
Zambia is renowned among safari enthusiasts for its national parks and expert guides.
Kafue National Park, the country’s largest, boasts diverse wildlife, including lions, leopards, and various antelope species.
While this incident is a rare occurrence in Zambia’s safari tourism, it’s not the first tragedy in Kafue National Park involving an American tourist.
In 2016, Bianca Rudolph was found dead in her hunting cabin, leading to her husband’s conviction for her murder.
