John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced criticism against the government’s decision to allocate funds for the provision of free tablets to senior high school students, labeling it as a strategy aimed at securing votes.

Expressing his concerns during a special public lecture at the Wisconsin International University College, Ghana, Mahama emphasized the neglect of crucial ongoing educational initiatives due to the government’s emphasis on tablet distribution.

The former President emphasized the necessity of prioritizing the allocation of state resources to address more urgent needs within the education sector.

“You bring a new curriculum, the children have no textbooks in basic school for the last four years and you think that giving pre-tertiary students tablets is more important. Of course, everybody knows the political expediency.”

“Allocating GH¢1.3 billion to provide laptops to pre-tertiary students raises questions about our priorities. There are numerous pressing needs within our educational system that demand funding. This initiative appears to be a tactic to sway the votes of young voters in the upcoming elections,” he added.
