Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Association (FA), was met by Spanish investigators upon landing in Madrid and was escorted to a police van as part of a £100 million corruption investigation.
Rubiales, 46, was taken into custody after arriving on a commercial flight from the Dominican Republic on Tuesday morning.
The investigation revolves around a deal involving the relocation of the Spanish Super Cup tournament to Saudi Arabia, with the Spanish FA agreeing to a $131 million (£104 million) contract in 2019.
The tournament was transformed into a four-team event and shifted from its usual August slot to January mid-season.
Last month, authorities raided Rubiales’ apartment in Granada, along with several other locations across Spain, as part of the ongoing financial inquiry.
Although it remains uncertain whether Rubiales is formally arrested or will appear in court immediately, Spanish media reported his arrival in Madrid at around 10:30 am local time.
Rubiales is already facing legal troubles for separate charges of sexual assault and coercion, stemming from an incident where he forcibly kissed Spain star Jenni Hermoso during a trophy presentation.
Prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year jail term, with a trial expected later this year after a Madrid judge cleared the way for proceedings.
Following the controversy, Rubiales resigned from his position and faced a three-year ban from FIFA.
His recent apprehension marks another chapter in the legal saga surrounding his tenure and actions within the Spanish football administration.
