Methodist Church of Ghana Plans Meeting With President Akufo-Addo Over Delay in Anti-LGBTQ Bill Assent
The Methodist Church of Ghana has taken proactive steps to address the perceived delay in President Akufo-Addo signing the Sexual Human Rights and Family Values Bill, 2021 into law.
Led by Presiding Bishop Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, the church plans to meet directly with the President to discuss the matter.
The ongoing impasse between the President and the Speaker of Parliament has raised concerns about the legislative process, especially after parliament passed the bill sponsored through a private member’s motion.
President Akufo-Addo has cited a pending court case as the reason for his hesitation to accept the transmission of the bill and give his assent.
However, the Speaker of Parliament has criticized this stance, arguing that it undermines the authority of the legislative branch.
Most Rev. Dr. Boafo remains hopeful about the outcome of their proposed meeting with the President, expressing that Ghanaians are generally unsupportive of the activities of the LGBTQI+ community.
He mentioned plans to dialogue with the President at the Jubilee House to find a way forward.
This meeting is significant as Ghana navigates the complex issues of religious beliefs, human rights, and legal frameworks.
The Methodist Church of Ghana’s proactive approach highlights its role as a key influencer in national policies and priorities.
Stakeholders from various sectors await the resolution of this contentious issue as anticipation grows for the meeting’s outcome.
