President Akufo-Addo removes GRA Commissioner-General, appoints Julie Essiam as replacement
President Akufo-Addo has removed Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah from his position as the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) effective immediately as of Wednesday, March 27.
The President has also disbanded the GRA board without specifying a reason, although it is expected that a new board will be established soon.
Sources indicate that Julie Essiam has been appointed to replace Rev. Dr. Owusu-Amoah.
Pressure had been mounting for Dr. Ammishaddai’s dismissal, with various groups arguing that he had surpassed the legal age limit for public officers in office.
In December 2023, the Concerned Citizens of Ghana had threatened protests over Dr. Ammishaddai’s prolonged tenure, along with that of his deputy, Ms. Julie Essiam.
The Minority in Parliament, led by Ningo Prampram MP Sam George, had also called for his removal, branding Rev. Ammishaddai as unwelcome due to his extended stay beyond the mandated 60 years.
Mr. George expressed concerns that Dr. Ammishaddai lacked a valid contract with the state and cautioned businesses against entering into agreements with him, claiming he lacked the authority to commit the state to contractual obligations.
