ECG Western Region PRO addresses intermittent power outages, plans collaborative solutions for improved service
The Public Relations Officer of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for the Western Region, Awal Boye, has discussed the ongoing intermittent power outages in various areas, during an interview on Beach FM’s Western Echo.
Mr. Boye highlighted the complexities of the power supply chain, emphasizing the roles of independent power producers, such as the Volta River Authority in generation, the Ghana Grid Company in transmission, along with ECG’s role in distribution.
” We have independent power producers who do the generation, we have the VRA, GRIDCO which does the transmission and after ECG does distribution so that’s the value chain…..so for instance if we’re going to undertake planned maintenance work, we give you notice ahead of time”, he stated.
Regarding the recent power outages, Mr. Boye attributed them to overloaded transformers, especially during peak hours around 7 pm when demand spikes.
Also responding to public concerns, Mr. Boye stated that ECG is actively addressing the issue, and collaborating with other stakeholders to rectify the situation.
Mr. Boye mentioned the possibility of providing a timetable to inform Ghanaians about power supply schedules, if necessary, further stating that the primary focus remains on improving the situation for both ECG and the public.
“We also indicated that we’re taking steps to do what we call injections to be able to replace those transformers that are overloaded. Generally we have really been in the business of trying to ensure that the power stays on so that our customers can enjoy and also use it for their business”.
