Dr. Elikplim Apetogbor, CEO of Independent Power Generators Ghana, has criticized the pricing of electricity exports from the Volta River Authority, stating, “the unfair part is the amount per kilowatt-hour of electricity sold to these countries that are not contributing anything to the Ghanaian economy.”
He highlighted the disparity between what Ghanaians pay for electricity (around 14 cents per kilowatt-hour) and the low export prices to neighboring countries (as low as 7 cents per kilowatt-hour), calling it “a great disservice to the country.”
Apetogbor emphasized the need for regulatory oversight, urging the government to empower the Electricity Market Oversight Panel to monitor and regulate electricity exports more effectively.
He stressed, “Let’s follow the regulations. We are actually not against it but let’s play by the rules. Let’s prioritize the local market Ghanaian first.”
He also pointed out the limitations of the electricity market oversight panel in monitoring export quantities accurately, stating, “unfortunately, the electricity market oversight panel lacks the ability to monitor and supervise exactly the quantum of electricity that is exported from the hydro resources.”
Apetogbor highlighted the consequences of over-exporting, noting that it leads to shortages in the domestic system, affecting consumers negatively.
