In a recent statement, Dr. Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, CEO of IPGG, has urged the Volta River Authority (VRA) to halt electricity exports and focus on meeting local demand in light of Ghana’s ongoing power crisis.

IPGG has emphasized the need for VRA to reduce the export of hydro-generated electricity to neighboring countries with lower tariffs.

Dr. Apetorgbor stressed the importance of avoiding high electricity tariffs on Ghanaians during periods of unstable power supply, calling on the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority to take proactive measures.

He also urged the Energy Commission to ensure fair tariff distribution between domestic supply and export to promote equity in electricity pricing.

“We are currently in crisis, Ghanaians are sleeping in darkness, companies cannot operate with a guaranteed power supply, there is a shortage in supply, etc. making the available cheap hydro generation to Ghanaians, the taxpayer is supreme and must be of prime consideration, irrespective of your survival concerns,” said Dr. Apetorgbor.

He questioned the fairness of neighboring countries benefiting from cheap resources while Ghanaian taxpayers bear high tariffs, urging immediate action to stop electricity exports for the benefit of Ghanaian taxpayers.

“We are aware of situations in the recent past where load shedding is high and at the same time over 200MW of generation capacity is being exported,” Dr. Apetorgbor added.
