The President of the Mobile Money Advocacy Group, Edward Ofori Agyemang, has expressed concern over what the group describes as double taxation on the businesses of MoMo agents.
He mentioned to Ampemg Darko Obeng, host of Adzekye Mu Nsem on Spice FM, that the Ghana Revenue Authority, GRA, had added a new levy in addition to the existing 10 percent income tax on all transactions, which is posing a severe threat to their financial sustainability.
Mr. Edward said the imposition of the e-levy on agent SIM cards and the 1 percent on all push and pull transactions from banks are creating an unsustainable financial burden for mobile money agents.
According to the group, this situation puts them at risk of losing all their capital due to the heavy burden of double taxation.
The group is therefore calling on the government, the Ministry of Finance, and other relevant stakeholders to intervene and bring the GRA to order.
The association, in a statement, threatened to shut down mobile money agent shops and agency banking to safeguard the livelihoods of countless individuals who depend on this sector for their income.
