A cybersecurity analyst, Kofi Annan, is advising financial institutions to tighten their security networks concerning the recent disruption in internet services.
Giving this advice on Spice 91.9 FM, Mr. Kofi Annan mentions that fraudsters can take advantage of the situation to scam unsuspecting victims.
He suggested that the banks employ 2-step authentication to protect the interests of their customers, adding that they can use an alternative system to safeguard their savings.
Mr. Kofi Annan also gave caution to customers of various financial houses to desist from performing transactions in the meantime and wait for the full restoration of the internet service.
“At this moment, the banks must tighten their security network in terms of the systems they use; they need to be vigilant. And for the interest of the customers, they must do two-factor authentication before any payment is made. When it comes to the digital platform, it outsmarts them at any point in time, so they should make sure they have redundancy service to alternate systems, when there is an internet blackout.”
“They need to keep an eye on transactions that are going through from their end over the internet, or if possible, they can hold on to internet banking service if it’s going to create problems.”
“They can channel the resources to in-service, so that if it is fully restored, then they open the online service.”
” Because when you make a transaction and it doesn’t go through, there are middlemen who take advantage of the failed process and attack you.”
