France has made history by becoming the first nation to explicitly include the right to abortion in its constitution.
The country’s parliamentarians voted decisively to amend the 1958 constitution, affirming women’s “guaranteed freedom” to terminate pregnancies.
The resounding 780-72 vote in favor of the amendment prompted a standing ovation in the parliament in Versailles, with President Emmanuel Macron hailing it as a moment of “French pride” sending a “universal message”.
Despite strong opposition from anti-abortion groups and the Vatican, the move reflects broad public support, with approximately 85% of the population backing constitutional protection for abortion rights.
France now stands as the first country to explicitly ensure the right to abortion in its constitution, marking the 25th amendment to the nation’s founding document and the first since 2008.
Following the landmark vote, the Eiffel Tower in Paris was illuminated in celebration, displaying the message: “My Body My Choice.”
