Nigeria mourns Nollywood icon Mr. Ibu’s passing at age 62
The Nigerian entertainment community is in mourning following the demise of beloved Nollywood actor John Okafor, known widely as Mr Ibu, who passed away at the age of 62.
Emeka Rollas, President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, announced the sad news on Saturday, stating, “I announce with [a] deep sense of grief that Mr Ibu didn’t make it,” attributing his death to a cardiac arrest.
Okafor gained fame over two decades ago with his breakout role in the film “Mr Ibu,” which became synonymous with his career. It is hailed as one of Nigeria’s best comedic performances.
Throughout his career, Okafor starred in over 200 Nollywood productions, including notable titles like “Keziah,” “9 Wives,” and various sequels to “Mr Ibu.”
The news of his passing prompted tributes from fellow actors, with Mercy Johnson-Okojie expressing her condolences, saying, “Rest well, sir,” while Joy Ezeilo, a law professor and former UN rapporteur, described him as a beloved figure who brought laughter to many.
Nigeria’s Culture Minister, Hannatu Musawa, praised Okafor as a household name who brought joy to families across the nation with his work.
Reports indicate that Okafor passed away at a hospital in Lagos state, although the specific details remain undisclosed.
The actor had been facing health challenges publicly since last year when he underwent a leg amputation in November following a crowdfunding effort by fans to cover his medical expenses.
In a twist of events, Okafor’s son Daniel Okafor and adopted daughter Jasmine Chioma were arrested in January on suspicion of embezzling $60,700 (£47,800) from his account. They are scheduled to appear in court on March 11.
Okafor’s later years were marked by turmoil, with reports suggesting he survived several poisoning attempts. He leaves behind 13 children, as reported by local media.
