More than 136,000 individuals, including approximately 74,000 children, find themselves confined within Timbuktu, a historic city in northern Mali, as highlighted by the NGO Save the Children.

The organization issued a warning on Monday, expressing concern over the dwindling essential supplies like food and medicine due to armed groups blocking access into the city.

Official aid routes have been entirely severed, leading to a rapid decline in supplies.

Save the Children fears that essential services within the city might cease if a resolution to the crisis isn’t promptly reached.

Reports received by the NGO indicate tragic instances of children being harmed or killed by explosive devices, and there are reports of recruitment by armed groups among the youth.

The city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been besieged by jihadists associated with al-Qaeda since August.

The jihadist restrictions preventing trucks from neighboring regions have resulted in severe shortages and an alarming surge in prices for basic necessities such as food and fuel.

The attacks by jihadists have prompted over 33,000 individuals to flee the city, according to information from the United Nations.
