Mali: Bus falls off bridge killing 31, dozens injured
Thirty-one individuals perished following a tragic incident in Mali on Tuesday, where a bus overturned and fell from a bridge.
The bus was traveling from the Malian town of Kenieba to neighboring Burkina Faso when it lost control on the bridge over the Bagoe river.
Approximately 10 others sustained injuries, some of which were severe. Local authorities attributed the likely cause to “the driver’s failure to control the vehicle.”
The accident occurred around 17:00 local time.
According to the transport ministry, “A bus departing from Kenieba commune for Burkina Faso toppled off a bridge. The probable cause is the driver losing control of the vehicle.”
The victims comprised both Malians and individuals from other West African nations.
Mali frequently experiences road accidents due to substandard roads and vehicles, as well as overloaded and inadequately regulated public transportation.
Earlier this month, AFP news agency reported that 15 people died and 46 were injured in another incident when a bus collided with a truck on its way to the capital, Bamako.
