Indian states ban cotton candy sales over cancer concerns

Several Indian states have taken action against the sale of cotton candy due to concerns about its safety.

Last week, Tamil Nadu implemented a ban after lab tests revealed the presence of Rhodamine-B, a cancer-causing substance.

Puducherry followed suit earlier this month, and other states are now conducting tests on samples of the candy.

Cotton candy, known as buddi-ka-baal in India for its appearance, is popular among children worldwide for its sticky, melt-in-the-mouth texture.

However, some Indian officials argue that it poses health risks beyond its innocent facade.

P Satheesh Kumar, a food safety officer in Chennai, emphasized the potential dangers, stating that the contaminants in cotton candy “could lead to cancer and affect all organs of the body.”

Following raids on candy sellers, Tamil Nadu banned its sale upon confirming the presence of Rhodamine-B, a chemical compound used to impart its distinctive pink color.

Health Minister Ma Subramanian underscored the seriousness of the issue, warning that using Rhodamine-B in food-related activities would be punishable under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Andhra Pradesh and Delhi are also reportedly taking measures to address the issue, with the former initiating sample testing and the latter considering a ban on cotton candy sales.
