Parliament aims to promote the use of local languages in proceedings

Parliament

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has instructed the committees on education, finance, culture, and tourism to investigate the factors contributing to the apparent decline of indigenous languages in the country and propose suitable recommendations for consideration.

This decision comes in response to concerns raised by Members of Parliament regarding the increasing neglect of local languages, particularly within the educational system nationwide, necessitating immediate action to address this worrying trend.

The Speaker revealed plans to modernize the chamber technologically to facilitate the use of local languages during parliamentary sessions at the upcoming meeting of Parliament.

“We intend to renovate the Chamber during the next recess and implement the necessary IT infrastructure. Additionally, we will recruit personnel to facilitate communication in various local languages, as we encourage members to utilize them,” stated the Speaker.
