In a landmark decision, Greece has become the inaugural Christian Orthodox-majority nation to legalize same-sex marriage.
Following a decisive 176-76 vote in parliament on Thursday, same-sex couples will now have the legal right to marry and adopt children.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis hailed the new law as a significant step towards eliminating inequality, stating, “The reform makes the lives of several of our fellow citizens better, without taking away anything from the lives of the many.”
However, the legislation has sparked division within the country, particularly from the Orthodox Church, which vehemently opposes the measure.
Archbishop Ieronymos, the head of the Orthodox Church, criticized the law, warning that it would “corrupt the homeland’s social cohesion.”
Despite resistance from some members of the governing party, the bill secured passage with the support of opposition parties.
Mr. Mitsotakis, who championed the bill, emphasized its importance in granting visibility and rights to marginalized individuals.
The decision has been met with celebration by LGBTQ organizations in Greece, with Stella Belia, head of the same-sex parents’ group Rainbow Families, describing it as a “historic moment” and “a day of joy.”
Greece’s move towards marriage equality marks a significant departure from its previous stance, largely influenced by opposition from the Orthodox Church.
It joins other European Union countries and nations worldwide that have already legalized same-sex marriage, positioning itself as a pioneer in southeastern Europe in this regard.
