Unilever is the latest corporation to report a challenging fourth quarter due to boycotts stemming from the conflict in the Middle East.
The company, known for brands like Vaseline, Dove, and Rexona, revealed a 15% sales decline in Indonesia during the final three months of the previous year.
Unilever attributed the sales slump in Indonesia to consumers shunning multinational brands amid tensions in the Middle East.
CEO Hein Schumacher highlighted the impact of “geopolitically focused consumer-facing campaigns” on sales performance in the region, particularly in predominantly Islamic countries such as Indonesia.
This trend of boycotts affecting multinational companies in response to perceived support or ties to the conflict in Gaza is not unique to Unilever.
Other major corporations have also reported similar challenges in recent statements.
McDonald’s noted significant business impact in the Middle East, while Yum! Brands, which operates KFC and Pizza Hut, stated that the conflict affected sales growth in various countries.
Starbucks likewise experienced lower earnings due to similar factors.
