TEWU-GH advises members to sustain strike until allowance paid

The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) is persisting with its industrial strike, urging members to remain steadfast in their protest despite a recent meeting with the government on February 9, 2024.

TEWU-GH initiated the strike action on February 1, demanding the payment of members’ Tier-2 and vehicle maintenance allowances. While the government has fulfilled its commitment to pay the Tier-2 allowances, the vehicle maintenance allowance remains outstanding.

In response to the strike, the government conceded to pay the Tier-2 allowances, a promise that has been upheld. However, the issue of vehicle maintenance allowances for eligible members remains unresolved.

In a statement released on Monday, TEWU-GH emphasized the importance of continuing the strike until all demands, particularly the payment of the vehicle maintenance allowance, are met. The union highlighted that despite directives for public universities to address issues such as overtime and extra duty allowances, the matter of vehicle maintenance allowances has been overlooked.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of TEWU-GH reiterated the ongoing strike’s purpose, emphasizing that it will persist until further notice. The union expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of progress on the vehicle maintenance allowance issue since the strike began on February 1, 2024.

TEWU-GH underscored the importance of resolving all outstanding issues, emphasizing the significance of fair compensation for its members. Until the matter of vehicle maintenance allowances is addressed satisfactorily, the union stands firm in its commitment to industrial action.

Below is TEWU-GH’s full statement.

The industrial action of Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) of public universities in Ghana enters its second week today, Monday, February 12, 2024.

As all may be aware, the strike was declared because of the government’s failure to respect the ruling of the National Labour Commission (NLC) for the payment of Tier-2 funds to the fund managers, the payment of vehicle maintenance allowance to deserving staff without discrimination, and the payment of overtime and extra duty allowance.

The government has since resolved the issue of Tier-2 and also directed the public universities that were affected to pay the overtime and extra duty allowance, but silent on the vehicle maintenance allowance payment to deserving staff.

Some of these issues remain unresolved as the employer, since February 1, 2024, has refused to resolve the issue of the vehicle maintenance allowance. The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) in the public universities, therefore, wishes to reiterate that the ongoing strike action is to continue until further notice.

Long Live TEWU-GH on the campuses of Public Universities in Ghana
