Pope Francis defends blessings for same-sex couples, condemns critics’ hypocrisy

Pope Francis has responded to critics of his decision to allow blessings for same-sex couples, accusing them of hypocrisy.

In an interview with Italian magazine Credere, to be published on February 8, he stated, “No one is scandalized if I give a blessing to an entrepreneur who perhaps exploits people: and that is a most serious sin.

“Whereas they are scandalized if I give it to a homosexual… This is hypocrisy! We all have to respect each other.”

Last year, the Pope authorized priests to offer informal blessings to couples in “irregular” unions, marking a significant departure from previous Vatican policy.

While Western churches generally welcomed the decision, bishops in Africa expressed reservations, citing cultural considerations.

Despite this disagreement, African bishops maintained their loyalty to the Pope.

Criticism has also arisen from conservative factions within the church, particularly in the United States and parts of Europe.

Pope Francis suggested these critics belong to “small ideological groups” that selectively apply church teachings and target homosexuality.

The Vatican clarified that the blessings for same-sex couples are for the individuals involved, not the union itself.

The Pope emphasized that he blesses “two people who love each other” and asks for their prayers.

Francis’ authorization of blessings for same-sex couples reflects his broader effort to change the church’s approach to LGBTQ+ Catholics, though it faces resistance from some quarters within Catholicism.

Regarding questions about his health and mobility, the Pope asserted that the church is governed by the head, not the legs, emphasizing the importance of church leaders understanding the struggles of the people they serve.

He reiterated his commitment to being close to the faithful and emphasized the need for empathy and compassion among clergy.
