Police confrontation in Kwahu results in two fatalities
Two individuals have reportedly lost their lives, purportedly struck by stray bullets discharged by the police while attempting to quell a volatile crowd in the Kwahu South Municipality of the Eastern Region.
Sources indicate that the incident transpired at the chief’s palace, where the police were intervening to rescue a suspected murderer, 23-year-old Kwasi Tenkorang, accused of raping and killing a 45-year-old woman, Akua Kyerewaa, in the farming community of Adwumasu within the Kwahu South Municipality.
The suspect, allegedly an ex-convict, had been evading authorities since the incident. A 65-year-old brother of the victim, Kwasi Antwi, who endeavored to rescue his sister during the crime, succumbed to fatal injuries sustained from a metal bar to the head.
An eyewitness named Frederick, en route to the farm, narrowly escaped death after observing the incident and being pursued by the suspect.
The fugitive was eventually apprehended on Sunday, February 4th, and taken to the chief’s palace.
Upon learning of the arrest, enraged community members stormed the palace, demanding the suspect’s immediate release for impromptu justice. However, the police, summoned to the scene, thwarted their efforts.
Reports suggest that the community members, growing restless when their demands were not met, began hurling stones at the police, resulting in the destruction of a service vehicle and four police motorbikes.
In an attempt to disperse the agitated crowd, the police fired warning shots, inadvertently injuring five individuals.
Tragically, two of them succumbed to their injuries, while three others are currently undergoing treatment at the Kwahu Government Hospital in Atibie.
