Emure

Emure Ekiti experienced a mix of relief and sorrow as the kidnapped pupils and teachers from the Apostolic Faith Group School were freed after a traumatic seven-day period.

However, their happiness was overshadowed by the tragic death of their school bus driver, Taye Rasaki, at the hands of the kidnappers.

“We are grateful for the safe return of the children and teachers,” expressed Adebayo Oluwatosin, Emure Council Area Chairman, with a somber tone.

“But our hearts ache for Mr. Rasaki’s family, who suffered the loss of his life in this senseless act.”

The incident occurred on Monday evening when armed assailants ambushed the school bus as it transported students and staff back home in Eporo.

Nine individuals were abducted, leaving the bus abandoned on the roadside, instilling fear throughout the community.

Initially, the kidnappers demanded an exorbitant N100 million ransom per victim, later reducing it to N15 million for all nine.

Threats against the captives only added to the distress of their families, who anxiously awaited news.

Finally, at 1:30 am on Sunday, a glimmer of hope emerged as security forces, assisted by local residents, secured the release of the hostages.

Ekiti Police spokesperson Sunday Abutu confirmed the rescue, but lamented the loss of the driver, who was fatally attacked by the abductors.

Colleagues described him as a compassionate and dedicated individual who will be deeply missed.

Authorities continue to investigate the kidnapping, with a commitment to apprehend the culprits and deliver justice.

However, for the families impacted by this tragedy, the emotional wounds will be profound.

This incident underscores the alarming trend of kidnapping in Nigeria, particularly targeting schools and their vulnerable communities.

The Ekiti State government has pledged to redouble efforts in combating this issue and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
