Henry Quartey laments experienced MPs leaving Ghana’s legislature
The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso Central and Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has expressed concern over the departure of experienced MPs from Ghana’s legislature.
Numerous seasoned lawmakers from both political parties have either declared their decision not to seek re-election after their current terms or lost in parliamentary primaries, indicating an impending exit from Parliament after the December polls.
Quartey emphasized the potential impact of their departure on the country’s parliamentary practices. He specifically highlighted the importance of seasoned legislators, citing Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s enduring presence and contributions in Parliament as a testament to their significance.
According to Quartey, the wealth of experience and contributions from long-serving MPs like Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has played a crucial role in the country’s development.
The Ayawaso Central MP expressed concern that the departure of such seasoned individuals poses a challenge to the continuity and effectiveness of parliamentary proceedings.
When asked whether experienced MPs should be protected by their political parties, Quartey acknowledged the benefits of such protection, citing the need for continuity in parliamentary practice.
However, he commended the national executives for allowing a competitive process, stating that the NPP believes in fostering competition to avoid imposing candidates and encourage the people to make their own choices. Quartey believes that this approach will result in more enthusiastic support for the chosen candidates.
