End of an Era: Ex-Minister Reflects on Ghana’s Football Status

Former Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Vincent Oppong Asamoah, acknowledges that Ghana’s status as a football powerhouse is no longer tenable, given the team’s underwhelming performance in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast.

Ghana was crushed out of Group B after failing to win a single game in the group, which had Mozambique, Cape Verde, and Egypt.

Speaking exclusively to Spice 91.9 FM, the Member of Parliament for Dormaa East mentioned that we have had the fundamentals wrong for a longer period, leaving the country out of the category of football nations on the continent.

“We have waited for over 40 years, and we continue to make the same mistakes. One of the things we should understand as a country is that we are no longer a football nation.” He told Takoradi-based Spice 91.9 FM.

We need to be aware of our mistakes and begin to act seriously. There are best practices elsewhere that we can copy in terms of selection preparations ahead of major tournaments. The member of parliament added.

In the last two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana has been unable to advance beyond the group stages, leading to disappointment among football enthusiasts nationwide.
